New Dragonball Special Coming This Fall

While it isn’t directly related to the film, I thought it was worth a post. Reader Bullza came across this post from Anime News Network:

This year’s 21st issue (released on April 21) of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has announced that a “Jump Super Anime Tour” will visit 10 Japanese cities this fall with new anime specials for Dragon Ball and One Piece. The tour is the eighth project that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the magazine. The magazine also hints that at least one other title will also be animated.

I sure hope Toriyama’s involved.

    interesting. It probably doesn’t tie in directly with the movie. Could indirectly generate some hype for it though. Come to think of it is the movie being released internationally around the same time as North America’s release?

    This is a little confusing. It’s Shonen Jump, which does mangas but they said animated. So is the DB special going to be manga, animated or both? Either way, I’m all for it so long as Toriyama’s doing the story. :D

    Toriyama doesn’t animate anything. Toei Animation in conjunction with Toriyama’s Production company, Bird Studios animated the franchise.

    I’m not surprised. DragonBall turns 25 next year, maybe this is gonna be the thing that segways us into a brand new remake series that is soley called “DragonBall” and doesn’t have the time fillers that Toei originally used(extended fight scenes, power ups taking years, etc.).

    Wow…now I bet all those Dragonball AF skeptics are hitting themselves as of now…but nah, this sounds quite interesting…but seriously, what more can they add to the series with the same characters? But considering its a special it will be telling the story of another character(s), ie History of Trunks and Father of Goku. So maybe a story on Goku’s immortality after GT?

    this is interesting. It’d be cool if they did follow goku’s journey after DBGT. But odds are it will be something about as exciting as the Goku Jr. special. And I’m an avid DB fan, but i couldn’t sit throught that whole Goku Jr. special - talk about boring.

    To clear up any confusion on if this will be animated or not, the article also goes on to say “The magazine also hints that at least one other title will also be animated.”

    So I would imagine that mean’s One Piece and Dragonball will be animated….and wow….I’m in complete shock…

    I’m looking forward to this more then I am the movie

    CGI wouldn’t be a step up, far from it. The show’s great as it is.

    I’m hoping for a nice little special, well animated like the current specials are with most of the cast showing up and getting to hang out. I’ve been wondering whether anything would be happening for the anniversary coming up, and hopefully either this’ll be it or there’ll be something else cool.

    I just hope it’s not something like that DBZ-Naruto-One Piece crossover manga they did awhile back, or like that Dragon Ball: Path to Power. We’ve already got those, let’s see something else. Something new preferably. I wonder if it’ll have to do with Dragon Ball Oniline.

    I’ve been wishing for the same thing. That’d be the best thing they can do for this series. Reanimate the show, make the animations crisp and in HD quality and for goodness’ sakes, get rid of ALL the filler and ALL the extended gasp scenes where the character has that shocked look on their face while the camera sloooowly pans in for 5 minutes. That’s why I prefer the manga as of now. 8)

    I totally agree wth the post bfor me,forbidden kingdom Shia gov ppl ideas about way shut be in the movie. I highly recommend u guys watch coz it has similiar dragonball elements, it even involves the monkey king San wukong himself, and journey to the west and eat not,

    Hmm for ages i was wishing i was born Japanese so i could understand the original Dragonball without subs.

    Then when they said they were making a dragonball movie in english and i decided it was better to be english…

    Now theres MORE dragonball to come, in animation form so it will be synced with japanese voices.

    Jeff The Forbidden Kingdom is not based on the Dragon Ball world its based on the Chinese story Journey to the West its about Sun Wukong aka The Monkey King also Dragonball is base on the Journey to the West with changes.

    heres some info Jeff before u say anything

    Jet Li portrays the character Sun Wukong in the 2008 movie The Forbidden Kingdom.

    The main character Son Goku from Akira Toriyama’s Dragonball was originally based on Sun Wukong, and many other major characters in the series were also originally based on characters from the Monkey King/Journey West story.

    There actually was never an official manga crossover between DragonBall, One Piece, and Naruto, most likely a tonne of fan manga, but nothing official. However, there has been crossovers in Video Games, like Battle Stadium D.O.N(DragonBall, One Piece, Naruto), and the Jump Stars series. In terms of official manga, there was a DragonBall, and One Piece crossover called “Cross Epoch” but that was a one shot kind of thing.

    Also, I never had a problem with the actual filler in DragonBall and DragonBall Z. By filler, I mean storylines found exclusively in the anime. Which I think for DBZ was only the Garlic Jr. Saga. I had a problem with the time filler Toei implemented. For those who don’t know, DragonBall’s manga was released in a weekly format, in the Japanese Anthology Manga Magazine “Weekly Shonen Jump”.In a Chapter a week format. However the same applied to the TV anime. And as one might expect, adapting 12-15 pages a week into 22-25 minutes an episode is extremely hard because you simply don’t have an adequate amount of material to adapt. So Toei decide to extended fight, and power up scenes,aswell as adding those “Staring Compeititions” something maybe lasting a panel or few in the manga, may be minutes in the anime. That I hated, and a new series wouldn’t have to do this because the manga ended in 1996.

    And I might be the one of the 4 people who actually like DragonBall GT, aswell as a Hero’s Legacy.

    I hate to say it, but I have to agree with you. The smilies are getting out of control.

    On another Note…

    When are we going to get a poster for this movie. Release a poster FOX and let us all drool over it for a few weeks.

    I can wait for a teaser and pictures, especially if theres lots of special effects involved. I also wish Chatwin would break his silence, damn chatwin, damn him.

    I also think Emmy Rossum will be perfect as Bulma, anyone agree?

    @ Daimao: Yeah, that’s what I was talking about. Cross Epoch, I hope it’s not just an animated version of that. It was just the One Piece and DBZ guys trying to get to a party or something.

    The filler I’m talking about that I’d like removed is all the junk scenes that are meant to only take up time in an episode. Scenes like during the Cell Games where it would constantly cut to something stupid besides the fight, like the telephone companies handling complaints, or the cuts to Mr. Satan saying “it’s a trick!” every two seconds and the part with his sidekicks who weren’t never appeared in the manga.

    I would like to see how the special turns out? Are they gonna follow the story cause when GT ended everybody was dead… I mean Pan was like 80! Unless it takes place in the other realm or demiension… whatever its called.

    They should do a next generation type thing with mini goku and mini vegeta from the world tournement at the end of GT… that would be cool. There could be another picolo since he just spit out anohter egg!

    well they are making a dragon ball online game a mmo that is 500 after the last fight with i think buu and pretty much what there saying is that in dives into what happens after DBZ but it totaly different from GT because GT was something they asked toriyama to do. It was never a manga, so i think this is going to be the manga that would have been instead of DBGT, which was kind out of place in the world of db i think not totaly but seemed out of place i mean i liked it but meh. so it could be like and alternet thing. The main thing i liked about DBGT and Dragonball 10th anivirsory was the way it if drawn i love it.

    Like the above poster said, the Dragonball Z MMO is supposed to take place 500 or so years after the end of DBZ. In the game, something takes over the Earth and you get to play 3 available races to save it. etc. etc.

    DBGT was a Toei creation and not a Toriyama creation. This takes place years after DBZ. Not GT! Toriyama was actively involved in making this game so there will be no trace what-so-ever of GT’s existence in this game.

    But on topic news!
    I personally hope its a new movie or something. And not a bad movie! Like a good movie which features all our favorite characters. Maybe taking place after the whole Buu dilemma so it can be possible to fit it canonly to the series.

    I hope this Dragonball Special is an explanation on what happened to the Z-Fighters after Dragonball Z, And also about the new Dragonball Online Game. How did Future Trunks became the Guardian of Time and how did Gokou become Immortal because in the new Online game everyone is dead etc etc..

    i hope Dragon Ball special episode not just in 1 movie, i hope they will release dragon ball ova remake series, such us Saint seiya hades. people love human Z-soldier (Ten shin Han, Kuririn,Yamcha, Chaotzu). i hope they more involved in this movie.

    :x Mortal Combat was like the game, Resident Evil. But from what i see of this trailer, it’s nothing like the series. It may be one of the best movies to come out, a box office smash of such, but if it doesn’t stick to its origins, then it’s just another street fighter, can anybody say; ‘none American Guile or Kylie Minogue Cammy’. First of all, does anybody on this blog know or have a friend, who is a white guy called Goku?
    You’re only going to get camera tricks like crouching tiger, people pretending to walk on trees, fake fighting; and to you hardcore DB fans worldwide, you must be disappointed. By Goku alone, never mind the none green Piccolo and Master Roshi with a full head of hair, tall and serious, when has master Roshi ever been serious. As for Bulma, she should have blue hair and where is Krillin and Tien. Finally I have beef with the storyline, WHERE IS GOKU’S TAIL and what’s up with his hair? It may be a good movie, but it is not DB, give the movie another name it not DB. To be continued after the release date.
