AICN, a site that is know for posting early reviews of upcoming movies, has the first review of Dragonball. One of their reader, DON, claims to have seen an early cut of the film. here is his review:
Hello to all of you,
I am a huge fan of your site and constantly visit here but this will be my first time emailing you about something. I love geek movies because there is nothing better than a well made geek movie. Well after watching the 95-100 minutes (excluding credits) of the movie i say this movie was solid. Ya you heard that right. I simply love the anime but I was very very nervous about it being made by fox. After all the studio has been making nothing but shit lately. Another reason why I was worried about this movie is that the director is James Wong who made final destination 1 & 3 and The one starring Jet Li. What I watched had unfinished sfx and with no scoring done yet. Also… they will be adding one or two scenes which will be shot sometime end of october.
Now let me list the positives of this movie
1) Action - I wasn’t expecting the action scenes to be as awesome as they were. Simply put the best thing about this movie. The last action scene of Goku vs. Picollo are simply amazing and when picollo takes out his huge fucking ass sword with weird rectangle shape tablet attached it at the tip of sword and slamming it on goku was fucking awesome. Lot of blowing shit up, super cool flying scenes, awesome ki blasts. This fight scene was around 13-15 minutes long. There are other small action scenes that are fun and entertaining with slo mo but nowhere as good as the picollo vs. goku scene.
2) James Marsters as Picollo was awesome. He was perfect as picollo. Very mean and a villain that makes you say fuck ya kick all their asses. Oh and Picollo transforms into a light greenish color picollo towards the end of the movie.
3) Justin Chatwin as Goku. This guy surprised me a lot. I really didn’t like him when they casted him as goku but he did a damn good job in the acting department and he nailed the KAMEHAMEHA line.
4) Oozaru - the giant monkey is in the movie. Goku turns into a 8-9 feet tall giant baboon when he looks at the moon. It was awesome looking though a bit CGI. Maybe they will fix it later.
5) Emmy Rossum as Bulma- She was really really good in this role. I liked how she never acted like a wimpy girl and eventhough she knows she can’t win against the evil forces yet she kicks ass. A strong female role I will say.
6) Fullum Assasins - I thought adding these monsters were bad idea but they were pretty damn cool and there was an enitre scene where Goku and his friends fight these monsters and that fight scene was pretty damn good.
7) Joon Park as Yamcha was pretty cool. His acting was spot on like the character and they showed some cool fighting techniques of his. The fight scene between him and goku was good.
Negatives
1) Story - Dragonball fans will be dissapointed with some of the changes they have made with stories and characters etc. Krillin isn’t in the movie, Tien isn’t in the movie too. High school setting for the first 22-23 minutes was so not needed but ah well typical hollywood garbage of adding bullshit like that.
2) Jamie Chung as Chi Chi - Ya this was another casting i didn’t like and my worst fears came true. Her acting is as bad as Jessica Alba’s in F4 movies but thankfully her screentime isn’t that big. I really wished they could have tried harded to find someone else. I hope for sequel she can improve if there is one of course.
3) Chow Yun Fat as Master Roshi - I was dissapointed with this. I wanted the fucking perverted roshi who fucking grabs breasts and asses like in the anime but alas all of that is fucking gone. Also he acted like Mr. Kesuke Miyagi. You know what I mean. The lines he spoke were fine but I felt he was uncomfortable in the movie. Very dissapointed.
4) Shenron the dragon - Ah another huge dissapointment. This is like sentinel in X3 all over again. FUCK FUCK FUCK you fox. So ya they get all the dragonballs and the dragon appears but the dragon is hiding behind fucking clouds and you only see his shadow. The voice of the dragon was provided by none other than Christopher Sabat who provided the voice for the dragon in the american version of the anime. When the dragon spoke it was chilling but damnit it was hiding behind clouds. One can hope they will fix this but chances of that are very slim.
5) Eriko Tamura as Mai was underused character and frankly speaking if that is what their intention was to underuse her then they might as well have not added this character and just added more picollo. Her moments were cool and she basically was there to show her nice boobies but ya she was kinda wasted.
Overall, I would give the movie a 6.5/10 simply because i was expecting disaster but it turned out better. The positives I mentioned coupled with some cool funny goku moments like eating a massive turkey etc. were hilarious. If only Master Roshi was perverted and Shenron was visible I would have given this 9 but ah well they messed up there. Hopefully they will fix shenron as they still have 5 months to movie’s release but if not then well fuck you to fox and james wong. But in all seriousness I am glad it aint the disaster I thought it would be. Hopefully you guys will post this. Thank You.

I DON’T THINK I BELIEVE THIS GUY HAS SEEN THE FILM AT ALL. THE LANGUAGE USED IS VERY INCONSISTANT. HE SAID IT WAS SOLID MOVIE YET RATED IT UNDER A 7? Also I’m positive with 4 months of CGI still to do, They’re probably not done with shenron yet and just decided to put his shadows in the clouds.

The Story was a given though, so I could really careless about the highschool part. Jamie Chung being a negitive ain’t so suprising at all either. Her experience, and her landing this role, at the beginning, I know that’d be shown on screen. The Same goes for Chow Yun Fat not being perverted at all. But to be fair, he was quite serious around the time King piccolo arrived on the scene from the anime
What dissapoint’s me about all this is the fact that Shenron ain’t visible at all! WTF!! WHAT THE FUCK!! Seriously! Fox gives us this shit about goku being in highschool and not once will they give us a visible Shenron? I don’t give a rat’s ass if it was voiced by Chris Sabat! I wanna see him in full form!!

Im pretty much positive, yeah there will be no Tien. No Krillin. No Chaotzou. But I have the strongest feeling that we’ll see Yajirobi at some point.
Anyways I believe this dude like the chick before, has seen the movie. No im not gullable but considering the info both have provided. I can’t see why not to believe them.

Sounds decent, but his review is based on values he establishes, mainly how much it coincides with the anime, not how good of a movie it actually is.
It sounds decent, but like they might not throw enough bones to the fans.
We’ll see. I’m betting things like CGI Oozaru and Shenron are all just post production work. Although not seeing Shenron wouldn’t be too horrible for me if it establishes some sort of aura. Like a “so bad ass we won’t show you” type of feeling.
If done right… it’s great. If not, then… yeah. Not so great.

First of all. A straight from the Manga/Anime to live action with 100% accuracy would be just like power rangers.

As for the power Rangers thing, if you want to see the similarities, you will see them, that’s just human pride.
Krillin is too difficult to do as a small character so I would have written him out too. I’d also write out the Raditz fight and combine it with the Nappa/Vegeta fight, all of which would happen at the same time.
Goku would fight Vegeta while the rest went to Namek. I would write the Ginyu force out too.
This is Hollywood.
I still have a lot of faith that this will be a cool pop corn movie.

I think that if this guy is telling the truth; Shenron will HOPEFULLY be fully visible when the movie comes out. Remember he said in his review that the sfx were NOT completed on the screening he saw, which is consistent with the fact that we know they’re doing re-shoots and STILL working on the CGI for the movie. So I’m pretty hopeful that we’ll see more of Shrenron than “just a shadow behind some clouds” with the finished product.

This report tells us bugger-all. we already know the length, charater alterations, casting selections and special effects, therefore I could have written this myself. In fact I will:
I Have(n’t) Seen a Special Pre-Version of Dragonball Released by a promo company called FOMI (figure of my imagination)
1)The film seemed a little short to me, piccollo turns greenish when he becomes younger at the end, and then just as your expecting some more wrap-up, the film just ends. Also, too many scenes were taken up by cheesy hollywood-ish moments like the high-school bit at the beginning.
2)the special effects seem good so far but imo there needs to be more of them, the fight scens only lasted about 30 min (all told) and only half of that inclued proper fighting with ki blasts (althogh the flying is awesome)
3)Some fans will love this, some wont, obviously a japanese manga cant be fully transposed to the american big screen, so all in all I would rate it at 6.4

I hope this is not true or they fix it. The dragon should be shown. That is a big part of dragonball. Goku transformed is not 8-9 feet. Try 100 feet or more.

Considering we haven’t seen a full official trailer yet, and there’s still some CGI that may need to be done I have a hard time believing that someone has already seen a version of the movie other than those working on it.
My opinion still stands that we all must wait to see something legit before we pass any sort of judgment on it. I still have high hopes that it’s going to be good. Different, but still worth it.

I think this guy is jumping the gun a bit. They have around 5 more months of post production on this movie to brush up, tweak, and add things. so i highly doubt that he watched the finished version of it. Plus it’s not uncommon for studios to show a somewhat finished version of the movie to people to obtain feedback on if they need to change or alter things. Look how many movies have alternate endings. So just keep that in mind that things could change by the time this is released

I am pretty sure the Shenron parts will be fixed they clearly just did that for the time being till they can get all the cgi done, cause he said Ozzaru didn’t look like he was finished either. I am sure we are going to see the great Shenron flying around in his massive size with his deep voice telling Goku to make his wish!
I am still really hopeing they are going to add more time to this movie and at least go for a 120 min film.

I sincerely doubt that this “DON” individual has seen Dragonball, unfinished or otherwise. He claims that Shen Long is only visible through a pillar of smoke/clouds, which sounds bogus to me. Not to mention that he claims Oozaru is in the movie when the giant monkey hasn’t even been confirmed for the film.
Now, while this has been yet to be confirmed or not, I just don’t believe this man has seen Dragonball. End of story.

Sounds quite real, to me he sounds like a guy who just loves the anime but still can’t come to grips with some of the changes that had to be made (a pervetered roshi in this day and age wouldn’t come out too well with parents watching with their kids or public press). Annoying about Shenron but perhaps they are saving the awesomeness for one of the sequels? It may have been one of those scenes which they wern’t prepared to spend a lot of money on for 10seconds of a 100minute movie. FARKIN great to hear about the length, 1:40 sounds perfect.

Number one, he spelled Picolo’s name wrong. it isn’t “Picollo”. Number 2, I can say the exact same thing. I saw the whole movie in it’s full glory at the screening. It wasn’t what I expected, I mean, There was alot of action but it’s all too bliqe. Picolo has a sword… I know, If he has chi, then why use a weak stainless steel sword? Shenron isn’t behind “clouds” I don’t know where he got that at, Shenron looks like some from a Blizzard Entertainment cinematic, they over did his appearance, which is a good thing. You can tell it’s Chris Sabot’s voice voice acting Shenron, very familiar.
People can’t believe what I’m saying because I made it up. People shouldn’t believe this person either, I compiled my own story from other people’s stories, it makes it believable because people read those stories and expect this one to be like, oh he’s right, he saw the movie, crap. That’s not the case. Don’t believe anything from average Joes, unless it’s from FOX, not CSNBC or CNN, but FOX.

Uh, Olly…Either way they’re still horrible, and not desserving of a 10…jesus. Anyways, and yes they should of made Roshi the porn reading perverted and bearded goofball that he is in the anime, because it would be sticking to the source material rather than the shit Fox came up with which is horrible…And so what if it wouldn’t go well with a parent and their child, since when was DB/DBZ targeted to children, there’s blood, sometimes gore and obviously violence…well the Uncut versions that is…something like DB/DBZ should be rated PG 13. your opinion overall just sucks.

I have serious doubts that Fox would authorize any public viewing (and this guy definitely isn’t a member of the press judging by his literary prowess, or lack thereof) HALF A YEAR before the movie is released. Why rip off the wrapping paper half a year before christmas, know what I mean? There’s also no concrete information that we couldn’t already have surmised.
So, I’m going to have to say bullsh#t… not that I don’t think that this movie will be horribly disappointing and painful to anyone who grew up with DB/DBZ, albeit perhaps with an overall sense of relief that the bandage was finally ripped off and a live action movie actually made from the property. Still. There’s no need for most of the egregious mistakes and changes… for fuck’s sake, no KRILLIN? There’s NO reason not to include him. Why fuck with piccolo’s color in the first place? ‘Oh, maybe it’ll be cooler if we make him look human and THEN make him green’…idiots. Take creative licensing out on your own time. No perverted Roshi? What the FUCK audience are you trying to aim this at? Five year olds? Shit. Most of the people who watched DB/DBZ are in their late teens or 20’s by now, we can HANDLE it and if you’re not willing to remain true to the source, don’t touch the fucking property in the first place and let someone with balls enough to stick with what’s what take it on.
That said, this movie will indeed suck balls, but hopefully it won’t suck as MUCH as many fear it will- I don’t think there’s any question they fucked up at least in part, so the question is will there be any redeeming factor here or not? We will have to see.

After reading over this a couple time I do hope the movie ends up with a similar feel to what this review stated. Hopefully the crew ends up giving us a good film, which would somewhat help redeem FOX for some of there past deeds.

I am so pissed at you retards who are mad cuz the movie isnt exactly like the show. Who is retarted enough to think that in the first place? they wouldnt make any money on the movie if they copied the show cuz only dbz fans would see it, not to mention it would only be like watching dragonball all over again in high def. I for one think that they are doing an amazing job on the movie, its better that theure basically doing a realistic version of dragonball so we can see what it would be like in our time and our age, not the crazy future of dragonball. I do love the show and am a big fan, but there is nothing wrong with this movie so shut up already about it being exactly like the show, id like one of you to name one movie based off of something that was exactly like it in every way. and as for roshi, its supposed to be an all action movie and would be stupid if thy made roshi a perv.
