Dragonball-Live has a scan from Cine Live, a French Magazine, in which James Wong reveals certain details about Dragonball! Including an interesting bit about Roshi.
Is Roshi true to the manga character? “Yes, somewhat,” said director James Wong. “We kept his main features, like his humor. But in the manga Roshi is a true sexual pervert, which wouldn’t work in a family film. So we removed that part of the character.”
“I discovered that Dragonball had such a rich universe that it would take several films to cover all of its treasures. My goal with this movie is not to convince existing fans that Dragonball is great, they already know this, but to give a new audience. More adults, as I was a neophyte myself before discovering the manga!”
What is most interesting is that this interview may confirm possible spoilers that you all have probably been reading over at IMDB. A user there claims to have seen the film already and mentioned the same thing about Roshi.

sounds fine. I don’t think they’ve removed that part of Roshi’s character, just made it absent from the film, as far as situational comedy goes.
It would be sort of weird to see Chow Yun Fat doing to Rossum what Roshi does to Bulma, and definitely off putting to some members of the non-fanboy audience.
That said, we know that hints to Roshi’s character from the manga are there, so it should be a good balance. As long as he’s funny, I’ll be satisfied.

Well JP…I would take this review with a grain of salt. Im sure you are. As are most of you. It seems a bit fishy to me. It basically states what everyone is expecting. Well alot of people anyways. The special effects part gives it away. 6 months out…the film is not done yet…the special effects are not done yet.

I really wish they could have picked a director that was at least somewhat of a fan of the show. I wouldn’t expect it to be exactly like the Dragonball we all know, but any real fan knows what should stay and what should go. Roshi’s humor WAS his pervertedness, anyone who has watched the show knows this, this is his APPEAL. I’m sure they did this purely for keeping the ratings down…
The guy said that the sfx weren’t “photo-realistic”. That kind of worries me a little. I thought the whole point of changing things for a live action version was to make it “more realistic”, but we’ll see..

The shirt is probably the big thing JP, but I’m sure there’s other, smaller things too. Kind of like in transformers, there was a lot of Easter Eggs, and I think we’ll get thrown a few bones as fans in this movie.
And James Wong is a fan of this movie. There’s only so many directors who this project would of worked with. He’s stated himself this time, and many times before- he’d like to have included everything, but it’s not a realistic goal.
If you’re still mad because Krillin isn’t in the film, then nobody can help you. There’s a very good chance he’ll be in the sequel.
As for the woman’s description of the movie from imdb, it sounds great. She hasn’t done anything to make me not believe her, and while I’m still not sold- if it’s true, it does make sense. The Piccolo we have pics of is an old, light-starved monster, and the younger Piccolo will be a pale, but obviously green, green.
I find the one comment about Piccolo telling Goku he’s a Super Saiyan interesting.
People may complain about that if it’s true, but I actually think they could use that in the plot of the sequels. Goku could think Oozaru is Super Saiyan, only to find out Vegeta can do it to in the second movie, and then find out from Vegeta what it really is.
There’s a lot of room for this movie and it’s sequals to be great. People just have to give it a chance.

I was looking forward to Roshi’s pervertedness, but I think I just wanted to see him as a wannabe ladies’ man more than anything. Ya gotta keep that in. I really don’t want to see any scenes where he shrinks himself and hides in the toilet while Bulma pees.
Perusing through the spoilers, these sound pretty plausible. No reason not to believe them, but they’re not surprises either.

I mostly find it funny that it so much to people like wtf that we know they think it’s going to be a “fail” that they come on multiple times a day just to say so.
There are certainly things that may not be the way I might have expected them to be, or things that I might have initially tried to do differently myself, it still looks like a good movie. Anyone that is honestly being this picky over the translation of dragonball to the big screen has issues.
Yes, it was an awesome show. Epic, funny at times, etc… but lets be honest. It sucks. I still watch it and enjoy it, but it’s not the highest quality material in the first place.

If you truly believe Master Roshi glasses and hair made his character then every old person who has glasses and a beard should be Master Roshi. Chow yun fat is the best Roshi period. He may not be 100% faithful, but he has his presence. Was the Dark knight 100% faithful to there characters in the comic books? No!!
Aaron Eckhart didn’t look nothing like the 2 face in the comics or the previous movies and he turned out to be the best 2 face ever made. Remember this is James Wong vision of Dragonball. Everyone has there own vision of Batman and Dragonball. Why would you want James Wong to copy Akira story word for word. Then it will become predictable and would not be original. His story has already been told, let someone else tell the story and bring it to life in the theaters. So don’t doubt Chow Yun fat. Chow yun fat might blow you guys away, he might revive Roshi. You’ll just have to wait and see.

Im just surprised people were expecting a 100% literal translation from cartoon to live action. Hollywood ALWAYS changes things. Doom, Wing Commander, Resident Evil, hell even Mario Brothers were ALL changed ALOT. It was naive to think this movie would be translated detail by detail.

Well, I think the one thing to take from all this is and I think we can all agree for once, that making Dragonball a “Family movie” was a bad move. Considering how dragonball the anime/manga was very friendly family in the first place I feel they should’ve taken the movie in another direction

I am dissapointed in the whole roshi thing but the characters in Dragonball and DBZ arent easy to pull off. I myself dont think Chow can pull off roshi. But the rest of the movie like the fighting and stuff could defenitly make up for that and the other characters. And we probably wont see much of roshi in the next movies.

Wow!! I never thought about that. Im glad you said that. King Piccolo color doesn’t bother me at all. I like it allot, because it makes sense!! He was trapped for 2,000 years. He is not supposed to be fully green. He is supposed to loose his color. I thinks it would be cool to have Piccolo Jr. fully green, not King Piccolo. It makes more sence that way.

honestly wtf is an f-ing idiot, you already had it out for the movie, you expect them to cast everyone you want in the film, well reality check dumb@$$, it isnt f-ing burger king you cant have it your way. if that were the case then no one would like the movie because you could ask 10 ppl for a casting list and you would get 10 different answers. as for master roshi, to realistically potray him the film would have to be rated R or maybe even NC-17 and we all know that reduces the audience.

They’re not fucking it up nearly as much as you’re implying, and even if they changed some things, it’s no worse than changing wolverine’s jumpsuit’s color (which was a good decision).
If what that girl says is true then the movie will ROCK because it means they avoided most of the things that couldve gone wrong with making a DB movie.

Ok, then we have an “more Family-Friendly-Film”, which is “more Adult” … OK, that’s a huge difference.
And also Roshi without being a Pervert??? I’m just wondering more and more, how they could destroy the Images of the Characters more, OK, it still might be, that Piccolo get’s some retractable Antennas(which might be Animated, and be only revealed, when he uses Telepathic Communication), but really: Do they really want to mess with the Fans that much? - I mean, Micheal Bay did at least the Characters stay more in character, even tough he made them Ultra-Complex, and it became really nice in the end, but I’m more and more worrying about how this Movie might come out.
Seriously, if they get worse, them “The Magic begins” might still be the Best Dragonball-movie, even tough the new Movie is having better Costumes/Effects/Casts.
At least there was an Roshi, that was fitting the Character in whole (Pervy + Funny + Skilled enough to use an Energy-Attack, and to makes his Body look like Arnold on massive Steroids).
What’s next: Sayans without ever having a Tail? Krillin with a Nose(Oh wait wasn’t that already that way)?
It could also come worse, if the Fights with those Identical-Looking Enemies turn out to be looking like in a Power-Rangers-Movie/Series.
