Loading ...Rossum Spills Some Dragonballs
MTV’s Splash Page interviewed Emmy Rossum and for the first time one of the films actors speaks all about Dragonball!
“In it, [I'm] riding a motorcyle in a leather catsuit, so that’s always fun — and I have five guns that spin all around,” said Rossum of her role as Bulma, the sometimes-partner to the film’s hero, Goku (played by Justin Chatwin). “I had never ridden a motorcycle before. I think I was more concerned about the safety of the people in the crew because sometimes I would lose control and veer randomly off into people.”
As for her character’s fondness for gunplay, Rossum said she’d never fired — or even held — a gun before “Dragonball,” but feels more than confident about pulling off her character’s trigger-happy habits thanks to some training with local Marines.
That calm-under-fire training will probably come in handy for the “Phantom of the Opera” actress, considering the level of scrutiny an adaptation of one of the anime and manga worlds’ most popular properties brings with it. According to Rossum, fans should be pleasantly surprised with the way the property has been translated to a live-action project.
“When I signed on to the project, I was a big fan of the anime and knew [Bulma] as the iconic blue, bobbed character and wanted to stay true to that — but we also wanted to make it realistic,” explained Rossum. “So in keeping with the director and what the studio really wanted, we adapted her look to be a little more realistic and human, and little bit more believable for contemporary day. She’s pretty bad-ass, but still quirky and fun, and kind of ridiculous in the way she is in the anime.”
That doesn’t mean the legions of “Dragonball” faithful aren’t far from her mind, though. Rossum said her first encounter with “Dragonball” was the Saturday morning cartoon, only to realize that “it’s really so much more than that — from the comic to [the cartoon] to the whole franchise and brand, so many people feel such a closeness to these characters.”
“So, it’s a little bit stressful to play a character that so many people hold close to their hearts,” she admitted, “but you just hope you do it justice and they like it.”
Rossum also hinted at a few aspects of the film that should have fans guessing, telling MTV News that she’s “seen some wax molds” for potential action figures, and cautiously acknowledged that a video game based on the film was “a possibility.”
Possibly the most interesting tease she offered up was her anticipation of not only seeing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alum James Marsters appear on screen in his role as Lord Piccolo, but also “an incredible monster that I can’t talk about that is very, very tall.”
“It’s actually a very tall man — an 8-foot man,” she added. “It’s based on something else from the… You know, I can’t really say anything else.”
I think we all know what she’s talking about there!

Maybe they’ll also use some CG to make him look bigger like the bearded guy in Harry Potter or a reverse effect like the Hobbits it Lord Of The Rings. It could also be the top half of the dragon which could be filled in later on with CG. Or some random guy to get his ass kicked in the tournament.

That’s easy to figure out.
If they had used the same starting point as the show, they would have needed to start with kid actors and make LOTS of movies, leading up to the parts that most people want to see (I personally like the beginning of the series more, but let’s face it, most people aren’t very familiar with it).
Since they’re using a different starting point, they still need to bring all the characters together, only it happens when they’re older than in the show. They don’t have time to show everything, such as goku whole journey, helping ChiChi’s father to extinguish his castle’s fire, etc.
So what’s a good way to bring a bunch of characters together? Well, they all go to the same school! The school isn’t as “made up” as you’d think. Most likely, they borrowed lots of elements from when Gohan went to school (since this will be a trilogy and most likely will end at Freeza like the comics were supposed to).
A weirdo forest kid who has to hide his true skills while going to school in a big city? That’s straight from the comic. Only, they changed it around, it happens to Goku instead of Gohan.

IT is OOZARU. WHy is he 8 feet tall? it is because goku goes to high school, because piccolo is not green, because bulma is a badass instead of the coward, because roshi has hair and no beard, because mai works for piccolo and not pilaf. Why because they have changed the series so much that an 8 foot OOZARU would’t be out of place. IT IS OOZARU!!!! It makes sense considering all the changes thay have made to the movie.

It is obviously Radditz. At the end, Goku will have to team up with Piccolo to kill Radditz (who brings news of Movie 2, Vegeta
) and also kill goku off at the same time, starting him out in King Kai’s in movie 2.

They’ll probably cut out King Kai’s, Piccolo will probably die off in the first and be reborn, Goku will be reborn with the dragonballs, Raditz might not even be in there, and Nappa probably won’t, either.

well Considering they said goku will be dead in the beginning of the the second film they could show Radditz’s arival but I think having them fight him would be craming too much in one film I can see them fighting him at the beginning of the second then they all train then fight Nappa and then Vegeta at the very end. So either its goku’s “oozaru form and or piccolo’s giant formation” ox king wouldn’t make sense nor would 8er because they would have to involve RedRibbonArmy and that would just complicate things even more for one film.
My whole guess on oozaru would be pretty much a werewolfmonkey thing that honestly what I think they will give us *note gokus shirt blackheart* his evil side comes out and its something that would be terrifying a taller goku with no changes would be the most retarded idea I think anyone on set or in fox would be like LAME IDEA! but on the other hand goku in the show picks up peoples attacks with ease like the the multiple arm attack ect he could just simply copy piccolo’s giant form but once again SUPER LAME IDEA. NO NEW VILLAIN because there is already a handful to choose from. I think why they left out the other heros is because they want to Focus on GOKU not 3 other guys who are gunning just to be as cool as Kakarot.

I’d actually like a flashback scene in the second movie, where Raditz (or Vegeta) talks about how Saiyan babies are taken care of when they’re young. It could show a bunch of sayian babies sleeping in those Sayian cradles, and one of them would be crying (Goku). The baby next to Goku would be getting all upset and angry because Goku won’t shut up. While this scene is being shown, Raditz’s voice is explaining who Sayians are and what they do.
I think it would be a nice little wink-nudge fan service to include something like that.
However, I agree that there should not be a movie where Brolly is the villain.

Guys! Let me just paraphrase what ATXhorns and Kame said for emphasis.

She means that this thing as we know it is very very tall. BUT is PLAYED by an 8 foot man. I.e. not 8 foot but much much bigger in the manga so it’s not 8er, sorry guys! Also she called it a monster which implies it’s not that human in appearance - so not an android or Raditz or Nappa.
Kame offers picture evidence of an 8 foot(ish) man with Emmy with make-up/prosthetics on his hands, wearing the same arm band things as Goku.

I speak for myself, I didnt want a guy with no nose in the live action but I sure want to see Krillin in the movie! Why? well because he is “just” the best friend of Goku and anyone who knows just a litle bit about Dragon ball knows the importance of this carachter to the story so botom line: It will be a tremendous flaw if the character Krillin does not enter the movie..

Its okay that krillin is not in the movie. We have new and better characters. Teto/Weaver and a cast of high school friends. Insert sarcasm here. I keep coming here for more updates on this movie. The more I know the less I like, yet I keep wanting to give this mess a chance because I love Dragonball. My biggest fear is that the makers of this film don’t share this love and are making a true piece of shyte!

I hate when people say Krillin cant be in it because he has no nose. He doesnt need to be noseless in a live action movie. Its just the way he’s drawn. It started when he was a simple cartoon. deadlock04 you are mising the point. you dont see anybody complaining because Tien, Chaos, Oolong, Pual, Oopa etc etc arent in the movie! by this time everybody as realised that this movie will be an adaptation and some characters are “dispensable”, but Krillin is the best friend of Goku he is also the human with most participation in the anime and he was the key to Goku s transformation in a ssj. I think he is to important in the anime to be throun away in the live action. thats wath I think..

I keep seeing people talk about how Krillen should be in the film b/c he triggered Goku’s trasformation into ssj, that’s not completely true. Are you all forgetting that Vegeta also lost his life to Frieza and nearly Piccolo. It wasn’t JUST Krillen’s death that turned Goku into ssj, it was the combined casualties at the hands of Frieza that caused that. It’s just impossible to introduce every character in the first film, the characterization would fail, some of them have to be save for future installments. I fully expect to see Krillen, Tien ect. in the following releases but the cast is just fine for now.

those who arent familiar with the series will find a very short guy hard to take serious in a fighting type movie.

Honestly, do you really believe that whatever Goku transforms into is going to be whats pictured above? Notice how those are not real hands on the end of the “8ft tall man”, theyre prosthetic extensions to make his arms longer… like that of an ape.
This guy is nothing more than a double for reference. They’ve used doubles for everyone from Yoda to the Hulk in movies.
And if she’d have said APE instead of MAN, wouldnt that have totally ruined the surprise? It amazes me how people are on this site, commenting on DRAGONBALL, yet they’re just waiting for something to whine about and throw down.
If you’re that disinterested or hate it that much, why are you on this site in the first place?

Heres a theory chatwin only begins the early stages of turning into an Oozaru in the first movie but it is cut short (possible tail cutting) in the second film we’ll finally get to see an oozaru in the battle against vegeta.

If they actually DID that, then the smart people would whine and say it looks horrible and stupid.

I don’t think this tall actor will play a “giant chatwin”. If chatwin did only grow in size during his transformation, his wristband would not expand, they would break.
As for Krillin, he ISN’T a midget, he’s just short. I mean I’m 5′3” tall and I’m no midget, but I still look short when I’m next to anybody near 6′ or taller.

theyre not i believe fox told rossum to say this….. becuase the hype from the movie has gone down tremendously…piccilo was there ace in the hole…even if ppl dont like the way the movie looks they would still see it to see what piccilo is like. i personally thought he looked bad ass. Sorry for the cursing JP but its an exciting time!!! Rossum said without being as blunt as possilbe that there is infact Ooozaru!!

Well I find that theres a good chance Krillen will be introduced when the Z warriors are formed. When Goku returns they will fight along side one another and surving through a battle like that could form a friendship. Tien might also be introduced into the series in this manner.

All the speculators who say, Krillin and the rest of the Z warriors will be introduced latter are in denial. This movie is not Dragonball. Its a movie that shares the same characters and plot devices with Dragonball. I would be much happier if it didn’t defile the name of Dragonball and was called something else. Lame ass East meets West Martial Arts movie or some such other nonesense.
Let’s all take a deep drink of reality. Hollywood has rarely made a great martial arts movie, let alone a martial arts movie with fantasy and sci-fi elements. The last one that comes to mind was the Matrix. Do you really think this movie will be as good as the Matrix? That said Hong Kong and Japan have been doing these kinds of movies for decades. Stormriders, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Shaolin Soccer, Kamen Rider the First, Golden Knight Garo and many many more. A Hong Kong or Japanese cinema directer could do some seriously amazing cinema with $100m. Look what they do with less than half of that. That said, for better or worse we are stuck with this version of Dragonball.
All the people that keep saying it will be good, I wish I could see what they see. I see all the massive changes to Dragonball and say, “uh-oh this could be bad.” They seem to look and say, “It’s all fine.” I just wonder at what point will all the changes cease to be fine even with them. Even the most optimistic supporter of this film has got to be a little skeptical. These changes are not improvements they are changes for the sake of change.
Imagine when Spiderman was made if they decided, hey it would be cool if Proffesor Peter Parker made a spider serum in college and injected himself. Then he becomes Spiderman but does not wear THE SPIDERMAN costume but just a version of it with a mask and modified lab coat. While we are at it he does not crawl up walls by himself, he uses suction cups. That is realistic and COOL! Hello, Hello??!!!
Listen up people movies based on fiction don’t have to be realistic! Movies like Dragonball can be really good when they stay true to the original source material. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings were not realistic. We all love those movies and can handle the fantasy aspects of both films just fine. I wish that Fox would get that and would have made Dragonball more of a true Asian Sci-Fi/Fantasy. This movie is verrry unfaithful to Dragonball and as such time will prove myself and others right in our collective disappointment.

People are still optimistic because we don’t know that much about the plot yet. As for what we know, all the key elements from Dragonball are there: Quest for dragonballs, goku lives with his grandpa, Goku tranforms at full moon (well eclipse here, and not 100% confirmed), Fast fights, Weird Technology, Bandit Yamcha, Brainy Tomboy Bulma, Pervert Roshi, Love between Goku & ChiChi, Energy Blasts, etc.
Of course there are still a lot of changes, and some characters are missing, but the basics are there. Of course we’re being a bit skeptical since we haven’t seen ANY footage, but it still might be pretty good. It will either be a horrible movie (that we will enjoy since it’s so bad) or one of the best of the year.
Meaning that we have pretty good reasons for being optimistic.

be a good film. I have whats called hope, especially since i like what i see. Then agian I thought mortal combat was fun to watch so go figure. (street fighter sucked)
