After the utterly ridiculous rumor that Fox was canceling Dragonball hit the webs a source at Superheroflix says hell to the no! It aint so. Here is what the site has to say:
The film was completed a while ago, and the reasons for moving the film’s release date from this summer to next spring was to insure that all of the needed special effects were completed. We have a source that is very close to the film. And he/she says that the first edit is done, and that it has been shown to those “higher ups” at Fox. And that they love the finished film. Our studio contact, who we aren’t allowed to name at the moment, worked on the production, and has seen the completed movie. Everyone involved seems to think they have a hit on their hands, and he even went on to say that it was “pretty darn awesome. There is certainly talk about a sequel. I have no doubt that it will happen. I’m sure that it will be a trilogy.”
No real surprise there. But it’s great to see that the studio is excited about the project.

I am sooooo excited right now!! I was mad when I read that rumor earlier, but reading about how Fox can’t wait to show us what they got, got my juices flowing again. I am soooo excited to know they aren’t waisting time, but they are trying to make sure the special effects is Amazing!!! This definatly made my day.

Im a huge fan of the manga and anime but this will be a disaster, the only thing i may be interested in is the speacial effects, not the horrible remade story, not the campy kung fu fights, not the characters other than piccolo
im just hoping it makes money but everyone hates it so that maybe, one day a proper director will take over and make it a darker movie, batman begins style

The only thing that sounds crap right now is how “goku thought he was a normal high school kid” (from the novel synopsis) meaning he will get his powers suddenly. I wanted him to have been strong since birth but hiding his powers at school (like Gohan did in the Buu Saga). He’s a Saiyan! Saiyans are supposed to be strong!!!
But hey, if they do it well, it could still work. I just want a trailer.
And they wont cancel it. There are already posters in Japanese theaters. I saw it when I went to see Ponyo.

I dont like how this movie is being shown in Japan a whole month earlier than the US…its BS! Who we trying to appease? If Akira himself had nothing to do with the movie then why should Japan get it first? And yes i KNOW DBZ orginated in Japan but i still think its stupid. And you know whats going to happen dont you? We’ll be able to download Dragonball before it even comes out to theaters. And that could mean a whole lot less money for FOX. And like most movie companies…if it doesnt get a certain amount there will be sequel. This isnt some 30 million dollar comedy that u could make 12 sequels to. This movie is supposed to bring in several hundred million worldwide. If it doesnt bc its early release in a foreign nation that had nothing to do with the movie…im blaming FOX for making possibly the DUMBEST decision in their film history.

As for the releasing of the movie in anothoer nation We usually get are movies earlly but the still make really good money out side of the US. And we as US people make more illegal video than any one else in the world. plus if you a true fans and really want to see this in it full glory like alot of fans do you wont download it you will see it in the theaters and there are enough of those fans to make plenty of money. Plus you want to see the recorded footage i hate watch prereleased movies because they suck there are some exceptions but not for a really big bugget movie like this. look at transformers they had a huge security plan so the people wouldn’t steal the footage and make copies and this is bigger bugget then that.

Um… do you know anything about Batman Begins? They totally recreated Batman’s back story to make a better story on film… which is what DB is doing. And you can’t make all those judgments when even a trailer hasn’t been released (no, Junior novel synopsis doesn’t count).
And Hinkle… the US does pirate more than anyone else in the world. Most pirating takes place in the Netherlands. We might do the most actual downloading, but even that I’m not sure of.

Ok if FOX doesnt release a trailer until 6 months before it releases…its technically not November but October…remember it comes out in Japan mid-march…which means everything for the movie has to be done by like the end of february…March minus 6 months = October ^^…at least for a trailer in Japanese (which could be easily translated anyways)

And the android, & tunks timeline leadinding up to the cell saga? Or will they make the saiyan saga 1 movie, then the frieza saga for the 2, just wondering, uub.

Most likely the sequel will be Raditz and Vegeta and Nappa.
And the second sequel will be freeza.
I hope they end it there, where the manga was supposed to finish, with a nice, meaningful death for Goku, the only Super Saiyan in 1000 years.
If all the kids start turning SS in the movies, thats when I’ll stop watching.

I think you kind of jumped to conclusions. I don’t think it means he will get his powers “suddenly.” Originally everyone just assumed he was a gifted fighter until they discover he’s a saiyan — after he had already gotten MARRIED and HAD HIS FIRST CHILD! =O
I’m guessing it’ll be similar in the movie; he always had powers, but not realizing exactly why.

I have to admit that I don’t really see the 2nd movie just being based on the Saiyans. I just can’t see an entire movie with Vegeta as the main villain. I mean he doesn’t even die, and how many movies do you really see where the main villain gets away at end? I’ve always viewed the Saiyan and Frieza sagas as one (I know that they aren’t. I’m just saying that’s how I see them.) Especially since the events of one, directly leads to the events of the next, it would make more sense to combine them, unless they’re were going to release the two movies like 6 months apart like the they did with Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions. I think they’re going to combine the two sagas in the Dragonball Z movie.

Look at any similar type movie and look at all the story that needed to be cut.

Well let’s be honest, there is ALWAYS a way. Even if they DO ruin it. It wouldn’t be the first time that something is drastically changed from the anime to the movie, Goku being in high school being one. Who knows. They could shorten the fight, or skip it all together. Yes, that would suck. Of course it would. But when you’re a huge filmmaking studio with lots of money you can do what you want. It just seems to me there really wasn’t enough actual story in the Saiyan saga to span an entire movie. One of the biggest things that happened was Goku finding out that he was a Saiyan, and that’s not going to happen cause we know that it happens in this movie. Other than that, Nappa and Vegeta pretty much show up and start blowing shit up, a few people die, and Goku and Vegeta fight. The end. Not much story there. I’ll tell you this, if the second is just based on Vegeta and Nappa, they’re going to have to create some extra story in order for it to make any sense. Especially for all the non-diehard fans that will go see it.

Well, of course it could be cut a lot and shortened, but if they do it as is…
Raditz arrives. Raditz meets piccolo. Raditz meets Goku and reveals his heritage. Raditz kidnaps Gohan. Goku and Piccolo team up. Goku and Piccolo fight Raditz. Goku dies. Goku starts on snake way. Piccolo trains Gohan. Z fighters train with Kami. Goku still runs snake way. Gohan still trains. Goku gets to King Kai. Z fighters train. Gohan trains. Goku trains (learns kaoken and spirit bomb as well as get accustomed to the gravity, gains speed, etc. Vegeta and Nappa arrive and blow stuff up. Goku runs snake way again. Saiba men battle. Saiba men kill yamcha. Nappa fights people. Goku shows up. Goku fights Nappa. Vegeta kills Nappa. Goku and Vegeta fight… which has all it’s own subsections… and then Vegeta’s retreat… and wrap up…
I got more compact towards the end. But look at those as chapter titles on a DVD.
Yeah, it can be cut down… but there’s no way they can get Frieza in there. Even if they cut all the Ginyu force and such.
I mean… they _could_… it would just be the longest and or most terrible thing ever made.

No, I don’t expect it to cover them either. I’m just saying, even with story editing and good use of time they can’t go all the way to Frieza in the sequel. Unless they like… combine Vegeta and Frieza and Captain Ginyu, and then combine Nappa with the Ginyu force…
Which would never happen. Or… should never happen at least.
Any story being translated from a series to movie is seriously cut (Batman, Spiderman, x-men, lotr, to name a few). They all keep the jyst of the storyline intact, though. I think the saiyan saga is almost a 2 movie story itself. But not worth being told in two movies… if that makes sense. it’s a very dense short term story with only one climax (vegeta). It can’t be split up, but it can’t all be told together. The frieza saga is more workable, however. Very well structured.

I see it. I can see them cutting out the Freeza saga in general and making the whole second movie to build up Gohan’s strength and using that to reveal Super Saiyan. Then Gohan turns out victorious in the end of the second movie when they fight Cell. Maybe have Freeza working under Cell, or something like that.
And Vegeta would be the main villain for the second one, because he escapes from the battle, and I do think they would do that. Just saying that.

wow tasunara. As much as you wish for that to happen, a lot of people will be pretty sad and mad that they skep a lot of that. the saiyan sagas and freeza sagas lasted over 100 episodes together. you cant condense all of that into one movie.

Haha, yeah. That’s what I mean. It could definitely happen. But if you’re right, I just hope they add more story and not just fighting, cause that’s all saga basically was. You need more than action to make a good movie in my opinion.

Whoa…yeah now that would be a mistake. Cutting out Frieza would be a disaster. And having Frieza work under Cell would be problematic as well considering that Frieza’s DNA actually makes up a part of Cell. But once again, who knows. They could pretty much change whatever they want in order to get to where they want to get to. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Kinda fun speculating about it though.

I see it the same way as 5aucy. Theres plenty of great stuff in the Sayian Saga that would make a great movie. Sure they condensed and cut a lot of stuff for the FIRST movie, but that’s because they’re using the piccolo saga as a starting point. Its not really that they’re rushing the whole beginning, but rather that they’re using a different starting point, while including some stuff that happened earlier in the series, (an obvious necessity to bring all the characters together).
As for the second movie, they don’t really have that constraint, since everything will already be established, so I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t do it in the most logical way: one saga, one movie.
The first part of the second movie could be with Raditz, then some time goes by and everybody trains for Vegeta (and Nappa if he’s there) while goku is dead and training with king kai, and then the last fight would happen between Goku and Vegeta.
I dont think they could do it justice by combining those 2 sagas, unless the movie is 5 hours long… and who the hell wants to see that!!!

That’s what I’m hoping, but the back of the book really makes me think otherwise. And I mean, he gets bullied at school and stuff… Anyway, I hope youre right and my previous hopes were right, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. That synopsis could be misleading, and he might just be pretending to be weak in the face of those bullies because he really wants to hide his powers.

I dont know about you…but lets face it…im sure plenty of people have and ARE watching DBZ for 5 hours straight. And a potentially kickass movie with 5 hours of action and special effects (well not the entire 5 hours) would be quite a feat. It wouldnt happen but i think the actual length of movies has steadily been increasing over the years. At least for the big big movies. 2-3 hours seems to be the average length and who knows…maybe by 2013 (when i estimate the 3rd movie may come out) that average will be 3-4 hours…

Well, hell I wouldn’t mind but I highly doubt they’d do that, I don’t think anyone would want to watch it in one sitting at the theater and they’d end up losing money at the box office.
I’d rather see 2 movies, doesnt matter if they’re made at the same time and are really one movie split in 2, but I just don’t want to sit in a theater for 5 or 6 hours…I can play videogames for longer than that, but I need to take bathroom breaks and have a snack once in a while, so I think its out of the question at the movie theater!

There’s almost no doubt in my mind that if they go for the trilogy (and it seems they will) movie 2 will be Saiyans, and movie 3 will be Frieza. Both sagas have enough going on in them on their own. Squeezing them together (even in a 5 hour movie, which would not do well) you’d be cutting stuff out.
Now, if on the other hand, Fox wanted to shoot the movies as one movie, like the last Harry Potter, and release the two at seperate times, as a multi-parter, I think that could work.

Well, if it originally was supposed to end at frieza, 3 movies, piccolo, saiyans, and frieza, sound right. I do love the androids, cell, and buu… but a trilogy ending at frieza sounds fitting.
Who knows if a trilogy is to be made, and it does come out, and it makes millions… whos to say they wouldnt make a fourth? Once a film industry finds a nitch that people like, they roll with it till it dies out. Spiderman was like that. Spider-man is getting a fourth movie and the plan is to make two more after that.
What better ending to a trilogy could you have than to have Goku turn super saiyan, which no one had done at that point, and defeat the “ultimate” evil in the universe?

I just think that at the rate they’re going in this movie, it would make it more suitable to the series. I mean, how many people would think it’s that logical to suddenly ship them to outer space in search of dragonballs, only to run into the worst possible thing imaginable. The Saiyan Saga could last an entire movie if they do it right, and then combine some elements of the Android, Cell, and Frieza Sagas. I think it would be a fitting end for a movie series like this.

To Anonymous & Tasunara, I understand & even sympathize wither ur ideas of how the DBZ sequels will, or might end up, it sounds pretty good. But wouldn’t u be interested in how the combinations of the 2 sagas would work out. Do u like the idea of goku healing in the hospital & trainig to get stronger to comfront the terrible evil that has come up which he must challenge. Or goku vs the ginyu force on namek, & vegeta discouraged because goku is not only stronger, but almost at the ssj level. Maybe some things might get cut, but only to make the movie shorter & more sense at the same time. I’m mean I’d love either 2 sagas & 1 movie, or 1 saga 1 movie, i’d perfer the first. What if them combining the 2 sagas made the movie unimaginably perfect. which do perfer, the first or the latter, let me know, yours truly, uub.:D

Well theres pontentially bad news for Dragonball, because WB have delayed Harry Potter 6 until next July. If Dragonball is delayed to a later date than April it will have to compete with that film juggernaut :S
On another note, provided Dragonball is successful which i think it will be, they’ll be able to experiment more with elements from the actual anime and manga in sequels. A second film would never flop because of its established audience from the first.

No actually, I watch movies all the time in English over here. They usually have both versions in theaters when it comes to foreign movies: Original with subtitles and Japanese dub. So dont worry, if you wanna download it on March 31st youll be able to find it in English, most likely (and hey I dont blame you, I probably wouldnt wait either, I think theyre shooting themselves in the foot by releasing it in Japan first).
Although I recommend seeing it at the theater too, since we all want it to do well and produce lots of sequels.

I’m calling bs right now. The first rumor about Fox canceling the movie I think is fake and this is even more obviously fake since it’s just a counter-rumor someone came up with to try to bring back some hype for the movie. The only one I believe is the statement from Fox saying the movie is still slated for an April ‘09 release. You need proof if your rumor is to be valid…not just some board member who decided to write an e-mail to the administrator.
That Wasinthemovie guy had proof with that photo, but neither of these rumor-starters have any proof whatsoever.

one thing everyone on here seems to not realize is that they may be experts on Dragonball, but they are by no means, film, literary, or marketing experts. Who is to say when will be too late to start marketing? The time Fox has decided to start marketing is based off of a history of marketing plans for other block busters and formulas developed so that they can maximize marketing effect.
Marketing is fine. As for other stuff, no.. it’s naive to just say “they are professional, so this movie will rock” but at the same time, it’s very naive to say “it’s not the same as the anime/manga” or “it’s not the way I would do it, therefore it will suck”

While all signs point to a teaser for TF2 to be with Eagle Eye, there hasn’t been any true confirmation of that yet, to my knowledge.
Fast and the Furious, while I haven’t really seen any of them, is a franchise film. Having a trailer out for it now is standard in that sense (HP did is in the same situation, though it was planned for a November release originally.) Dragonball is a new movie franchise, so they want to be careful with the marketing. Releasing everything too soon can kill a movie just as much as not releasing things.

guys, the second movie will definitely be based on raditz, vegeta and nappa and possibly even freiza. someone said the whole movie couldnt be based on one villain, well, this first movie is based on Piccolo so why cant the next one be based on Vegeta? Its possible thats where their heading with a sequel. I cant wait to see how Raditz would look if they decide to follow the sagas that way =D
