Hey thats cool. If you look closely you can notice Mais Knives or whatever on her arms. Goes well with the outfit. I love the people talking about Gokus race and crap, simply because there is literally NOTHING they can do to change the fact that Chatwins going to play Goku. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Asian people DO NOT have small eyes. They do not even have SMALLER eyes than western people. If you see a cartoon when asian people are depicted with lines as their eyes, that cartoon is badly drawn.
Goku is a character created in Japan, based on the Chinese myth “a journey to the west”, a story told for generations and generations in China. He wasn’t created as an alien; Toriyama made up the story as he went along, and that aspect certainly didnt come into his mind before the piccolo saga at the very earliest. Goku even believed Granpa Gohan (asian) was his real Grandpa until a certain point.
Now, Why the hell would Toriyama create a character based on an asian legend, with an asian name, who lives in an asian environment, and make him WHITE? He didn’t. Goku is asian, in the comics. Although it is never stated explicitely, this claim has MAJOR overwhelming evidence to support it. It is therefore the position which all intelligent people should accept unless some very serious evidence comes along to say that he isn’t. If you don’t, you are delusional.
Now, I support this movie 100%, and I don’t mind a white Goku in the slightest. I really don’t. I was just saying that this is a liberty that they took, and that it is different from the original material. Which is a fact.
PLUS the color yellow (the SS hair) represents Chi and is not associated with the character’s race in any way.
Do some research before throwing facts around. The comic Goku is clearly meant to be Asian, and all DB fans know that.
And, again, I don’t mind at all that the movie’s Goku is white. I’m just pointing out that this IS a difference when comparing it to the source material.
I AM ASIAN, and I live in SoCal — i see a million asians everyday. Not *all* asians have “small eyes,” obviously, but most of them do not have HUGE gigantic eyes so often portrayed in japanese cartoons.
btw, goku is based off the Chinese Sun Wukong, from Journey to the west — who is a MONKEY king.
also, although it’s different from each asian race, most east asians DO NOT have those big round eyes. big round eyes are pretty in any culture, so a lot of asian celebrities have them, but normal east asians don’t always have them.

My fiance is watching it for the first time (we have the new DVD sets) and i asked him if they looked asian to him, and he said NO WAY. I always took it at making fun of Americans. The only japanese stuff in the series, is the food, the dragon, and some clothing (mostly just chichis outfit) Krillin has NEVER looked asian..and thats a good point about the Saiyans being an entirely different race from humans. They just look humanoid.

I do have to say that I appreciate that they are paying attention to the ‘boot’ theme from the show. The simple fact that the hottie of the movie is wearing boots is quite nice, despite the rest of the stuff they left out.
im not dissing the movie…but sometimes people would like too see a straight up adaptation of and other people want it fit in real life…. but for me the character look is literaly from the manga book and series which i think its good cause the dragonball world is so fantasy but the part of goku in high school is stupid

@nicochi. I have to disagree. I really don’t see the “obvious” thing you speak of. There is nothing about the way that Goku looks that would make me assume that he’s an asian character, regardless of who created him. The fact of the matter is that when compared to Grandpa Gohan and General Tao, he looks white. That’s just the truth. I know you don’t have a problem with him being played by a white person, you’ve established that and that’s cool. But to say that he’s obviously Asian based on his appearance is an enormous overstatement.

Only in western shows, or shows that are badly drawn on purpose like south park. In fact, when you look at small eyes or eyes drawn as lines, it doesn’t make the character look remotely asian… it just makes them look like their eyes are weird. You just got used to seeing this as an asian feature in cartoons, which it may be, in western cartoons… which dragonball isnt.
Goku DOES look as clearly asian as any cartoon character would, without being a badly drawn western stereotype caricature.
Also, Chatwin DOES look like Goku… a white version of Goku, that is. Toriyama didn’t draw small eyes to “make characters look asian”, he drew some people like that to have some diversity in how the people look.

The shape is different, but does not hide a larger part of the eye than in Western people. Saying that asians have small eyes is an absolutely ignorant statement that can be disproven by simply going to a place with lots of asians, and looking around you. And since I live in Japan, thats easy for me to do.
Goku being asian in the comics is absolutely a matter of fact, and not opinion. If you don’t understand that, you don’t know the difference between the two and probably shouldn’t get involved in an argument, especially since you’ve shown your inability to understand simple and well explained evidence. It was the intention of the author and people who disagree probably don’t understand any other art style than badly drawn western cartoons.

I am talking about Norimaki Senbei from doctor slump (also from Toriyama) and the kids from Doraemon, among others.

Asian people DO NOT have small eyes. They do not even have SMALLER eyes than western people. If you see a cartoon when asian people are depicted with lines as their eyes, that cartoon is badly drawn.
Goku is a character created in Japan, based on the Chinese myth “a journey to the west”, a story told for generations and generations in China. He wasn’t created as an alien; Toriyama made up the story as he went along, and that aspect certainly didnt come into his mind before the piccolo saga at the very earliest. Goku even believed Granpa Gohan (asian) was his real Grandpa until a certain point.
Now, Why the hell would Toriyama create a character based on an asian legend, with an asian name, who lives in an asian environment, and make him WHITE? He didn’t. Goku is asian, in the comics. Although it is never stated explicitely, this claim has MAJOR overwhelming evidence to support it. It is therefore the position which all intelligent people should accept unless some very serious evidence comes along to say that he isn’t. If you don’t, you are delusional.
Now, I support this movie 100%, and I don’t mind a white Goku in the slightest. I really don’t. I was just saying that this is a liberty that they took, and that it is different from the original material. Which is a fact.

Funny, i dont see Asians in the series, i see very many american things. The football team that cell absorbs seems VERY VERY american… and Bulma never looked asian to me…
My fiance is watching it for the first time (we have the new DVD sets) and i asked him if they looked asian to him, and he said NO WAY. I always took it at making fun of Americans. The only japanese stuff in the series, is the food, the dragon, and some clothing (mostly just chichis outfit) Krillin has NEVER looked asian..and thats a good point about the Saiyans being an entirely different race from humans. They just look humanoid.

@nicochi. I have to disagree. I really don’t see the “obvious” thing you speak of. There is nothing about the way that Goku looks that would make me assume that he’s an asian character, regardless of who created him. The fact of the matter is that when compared to Grandpa Gohan and General Tao, he looks white. That’s just the truth. I know you don’t have a problem with him being played by a white person, you’ve established that and that’s cool. But to say that he’s obviously Asian based on his appearance is an enormous overstatement.

You’re seeing this the wrong way. Nothing in Goku looks particularly WHITE. If you wanna make the claim that he is, or that it’s “open to interpretation” you gotta provide evidence of that. And you won’t, since he’s not.

Ummm…how about the color of his skin. I’m not saying that he’s a white character, cause I’m not Akira Toriyama and I don’t know what his intentions were. I’m just saying based on his appearance, he LOOKS white when compared to other characters that are CLEARLY Asian. Just look at this:

See the difference between he and Gohan? Gohan is darker than him and has smaller eyes (which whether you want to admit it or not, is a common characteristic of animated characters that are supposed to be distinctly Asian) My point is this, you can’t say that Goku clearly looks Asian because he doesn’t. Grandpa Gohan does, and they look nothing alike. I’m glad they chose a white guy to play Goku, because he looks more like him than any Asian actor would.

Are you SERIOUS? Do you know that asians aren’t actually “yellow”? The skin color is no different from ours (and yeah, every individual has a different skin color so that might not be the best way to put it…)
Do you know that even though we refer to ourself as “white people”, we aren’t actually WHITE? And certainly no “whiter” than asians.

Only in western shows, or shows that are badly drawn on purpose like south park. In fact, when you look at small eyes or eyes drawn as lines, it doesn’t make the character look remotely asian… it just makes them look like their eyes are weird. You just got used to seeing this as an asian feature in cartoons, which it may be, in western cartoons… which dragonball isnt.
Goku DOES look as clearly asian as any cartoon character would, without being a badly drawn western stereotype caricature.
Also, Chatwin DOES look like Goku… a white version of Goku, that is. Which is what they chose for the movie, and I’m fine with that… just like I’m fine with the idea of a Japanese spiderman who has a japanese name and lives in Japan (and yes that show exists and it did suck, but for completely different reasons).

The rest of that post isn’t even worth my time… Toriyama DID say, that he had no clear idea of how the story would progress from the beginning and that he never planed very far ahead. Why do idiots not understand that saying he’s “asian” doesn’t mean I’m saying he’s a normal human being?
I can’t believe I’m actually putting time on this… if you think Goku is supposed to be white in the comics, you don’t know shyte about DB… simple as that.

To argue about how “Asian” a cartoon character looks is absolutely pointless. Espescially when the best arguments I’ve seen so far were:
“You can’t say that Goku clearly looks Asian because he doesn’t.”
and

Such eloquence.
Really, it’s like trying to prove how beautiful or not someone is — it cannot be done. It’s completely a matter of opinion.

And you know what… i’m getting tired of you trying to argue that Asians don’t have flat eyes — because they do. The majority of far east Asians have more fat on their eyelids(because they live in colder regions), and the weight from it causes the eyelid to pull down on the skin — and covering more of a person’s eye than someone who is white typically.
And in fact, i have many Asian friends who have been told to “open their eyes” by ignorant people, who really *did* think their eyes were closed. And yes, it *is* funny and I laugh at them when it happens.

Dude, a little hint: if you wanna support your point (which so far you haven’t), you need to present some evidence of Goku NOT being asian, that isn’t based on badly drawn western caricature of asians.
Toriyama didn’t draw small eyes to “make characters look asian”, he drew some people like that to have some diversity in how the people look.
Next youre gonna tell me the Doraemon kids arent asian.

Sephie,yes people telling asians to “open their eyes” are dumb, because they do not, in fact, look smaller or more closed than western people’s eyes. The shape is different, but does not hide a larger part of the eye than in Western people. Saying that asians have small eyes is an absolutely ignorant statement that can be disproven by simply going to a place with lots of asians, and looking around you. And since I live in Japan, thats easy for me to do.
Goku being asian in the comics is absolutely a matter of fact, and not opinion. If you don’t understand that, you don’t know the difference between the two and probably shouldn’t get involved in an argument, especially since you’ve shown your inability to understand simple and well explained evidence. It was the intention of the author and people who disagree probably don’t understand any other art style than badly drawn western cartoons.

And since I have an Asian family and have Asian friends, live in LA where there’s Asians EVERYWHERE, and let’s not forget, that I AM Asian, it’s even EASIER for me to see that although not ALL of them have flat eyes, there are many that do, and to say none of them do, means that you are blind.
It’s not “dumb” they really DID think their eyes were closed.
there are Asian people who have flat eyes, but it’s not “ignorant,” it’s a fact of life. It is NOT JUST shape. It’s like you’re trying to deny that Asian people look different than white people. I am not saying bigger eyes are “better.” I happen to have the inner fold and bigger eyes than my older sister, who does not have the fold. But everyone agrees that my sister is much prettier than I.

Sure, and some white people have small eyes too. Proves nothing. Flat? What the hell does that mean? An eye is a ball, its not flat. If you refer to the skin around it, then of course, thats the shape I was refering to. Nothing to do with size.
If there are actually people who think asians have their eyes closed when they arent, those people are CLEARLY stupid. I have never seen an Asian who’s eyes looked like they were closed when they were actually open. And I live in Japan. You’re full of it.

Well, i’m sorry if you never heard the term “flat eyes,” but me and the people I know use it a lot. And that is what a good number of Asian people have. There are also a good number of them that do not, but it doesn’t mean it does not exist.

Ok, well maybe you have, but one person isnt representative of the full asian population. If it was, I certainly would have noticed it.
This has nothing to do with the original argument anyway (about Goku being asian). He actually IS asian, that’s an established fact.
As for LOOKING asian, I’ll grant you that it IS based on opinion. However, he does look just as asian as other famous anime characters of which ive shown images before (probably awaiting moderation because of the links), who are clearly established as Japanese. I am talking about Norimaki Senbei from doctor slump (also from Toriyama) and the kids from Doraemon, among others.
Although the opinion that goku “doesnt look asian” is valid (as an opinion), it is based on a bad understanding of Toriyama’s style, or even the style of anime in general, most likely caused by the fact that asian people are badly caricatured as people with weird eyes in western culture.

Bingo. I think you see it now. Nobody is saying that he supposed to be white, we’re saying he looks more white than Asian, based on how characters that are distinctly Asian are drawn. Thus, it is better
