More Interviews!
The October issue of Roadshow features interviews with Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, as well as a synopsis of the movie. Translation via DBthemovie.
Emmy Rossum:
I am a big fan of Bulma. Because she is very energetic, sexy, and has a strong will. I think it is an honor to play the girl who is drawn as one of the smartest girls in the world. I will make the best use of her intellect, high motivation and reckless character which are drawn in the original in my acting. But because this is the live action movie, I have to do a little more three-dimensional acting.
I hope I can rightly play Bluma who the fans saw and loved, and I want to make them happy. I know how much responsibility I have, and I have a great love for her. I think I resemble her. Both of us will do what we decide to do, and we are fascinated with the boys. And we have a passion for the goal of our life and carry a torch for it.
Chow Yun-Fat:
He then talked about the Character of Master Roshi, “He is funny, very funny. (laugh) This is the first time to play a manga character in my career. Comic and movie is different, so I hope you will like my acting.”
And about his preparation for the role, “The script was very well written, I didn’t worry about it. Character is very fascinating and dramatic. The important thing for an actor is not money or work, but whether the character is fascinating or not.” He explained the similarities between him and Master Roshi, “He and I love ladies. But my wife is always around me, so I can’t be looking at ladies so much.”
Synopsis:
After Grandpa Gohan’s dying request, Goku starts on a journey to find Master Roshi and gather the seven Dragonballs to prevent the desire of Lord Piccolo to take over the world. In the course of his journey, Goku meets Bulma and using her Dragon Radar, they find Dragon Balls on the way. Goku arrives to Master Roshi, and he fights with Roshi. Looking at Goku’s fighting technique, Roshi finds that Goku is a grandson of Gohan. Master Roshi was Gohan’s master. Goku receives rigorous training from Master Roshi, and after a long journey, Goku approaches Lord Piccolo for the last time.

It looks like a very condensed summary of the original dragonball series. Gohan dies, goku meets bulma collects dragonballs…. skip pilaf …. goku meets roshi (better get nimbus!) ….. skip red ribbon army ….. goku fights piccolo.
Anyone who hasnt seen dragonball will be pleased with this but I think it will be a bit of a let down for some dragonball fans. Its like reading the LOTR books first and then watching the movies with alot of subplots left out.
I am still excited though to see the adaptation but will definently miss alot of the filler that was in place in the anime.

My hopes are pulled up a lot more now that Chow Yun-Fat says he thinks the script is good. Also this synopsis sounds good. Better than “Goku was an ordinary Teenager, until he found out he was strong!” This gives a little better view to the movie.

“The script was very well written, I didn’t worry about it. Character is very fascinating and dramatic.”
That just sold it for me, if Mr. Yun Fat thinks that its a good script, its a GOOD script!

Holy crap, that sounds WAY more awesome than the book synopsis
August 27th, 2008 at 8:09 am
As long as they capture main plot points, I think it’ll be alright. If they managed to cram in every single detail from DB the movie would take ages to watch! Same with DBZ; if they do a movie it would be incredibly long. I don’t mind a few changes to tie up the plot here and there, as long as they stick with the main points.

that synopsisoso thing sound good
August 28th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Well, Mai did work for piccolo for awhile even in the manga so its really not too much of a stretch
August 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
For everyone that’s saying ‘Chow Yun-Fat says it’s a good script so it MUST be good’ try and remember he’s done some awful western movies. I like the guy, he’s a very good actor and has done tons of great films, but he’s also done tons of crap, especially when they’re Hollywood movies, so try not to base too much on that.
