Chatwin Interviewed

Justin Chatwin and stunt team 87Eleven were interviewed for the October issue of Roadshow. DBThemovie has your translation!

Here are the highlights:

Justin Chatwin:

In preparation for the role, of course I read the original manga (all of it), in addition, I read Monkey King a little, because Dragonball is based on Monkey King. And during the break time of shooting, I got into Goku’s character, telling jokes with other cast in search of the real communication which can be used in acting.

This is the most interesting movie for me. Because I have never fought with anyone though, I trained martial arts and acrobat, and then we shot it. That’s fun as well as challenging. Fighting with Eriko (Tamura), she punched me in the face, actually she intended to hit lightly, but…it was a clean hit (laugh) She said “I’m sorry!” and apologized to me, but thanks to her, we could shoot very powerful action scene. Through this work, I think I could learn a lot of things.

Highlights of this movie are the action scenes, and amazing visual effects will be made at post production, so I’m looking forward to see it. About Kamehameha I only can imagine it now. I’m so excited. And this movie is the coming-of-age story about a boy, though this is set in a sci-fi world, in my opinion, my best scene is the moment when the characters who got together for the same purpose relate to each other.

87eleven:

Each characters has a different fighting style. For example, Goku’s fighting style is a hybrid of capoeira, karate and so on. Chi-Chi’s fighting style is based on kick boxing (Muay Thai) style, Master Roshi and Gohan are based on traditional Chinese martial arts (southern style). Justin has good muscle strength of the lower body so to harness this strength, we let him do action. His capoeira motion is very good. He has no experience of martial arts at all, we had to teach him from scratch. But he is doing very well for two months training period.

Highlight of this movie is fighting with Goku and Piccolo, I think it has a tremendous impact. Goku and Gohan’s fight is comical, and Chi-Chi does Jackie Chan-like battle. Each character has a unique twist on martial arts.

  27. Flohan Says:

There will be no real “Capoeira” fights, i think he ment XMA xtreme martial arts, which includes some capoeira moves which are rather acrobatic stuff… look up jackson spidells videos and you will get some idea (of course more close combat)

  31. Leo Says:

Since when was DB Sci-fi? I think of it as Fantasy*

  32. uub Says:

To KRAN. About the comment u made earlier about capoeira having nothing to do with DB or DBZ, try look at it from my view. As I say it does. A master of martial arts can’t be the best by knowing only one style, even if he’s a master of that style. Goku always got his next level of training from a diffrent master like King Kai, Kami-sama, or master roshi. All of each showed & taught goku something new about techniques in martial arts(even though we both know u can’t do half of those things in real life) When goku stopped getting training from all of his former master’s, it showed that goku was now a master of all he had ever been taught, & that it was to for him to go through his own type of training, make up his own techniqes.

Also if u watch the DBZ episode where Goku is versus the Ginyu Force, goku did a swirl against budda & Jehhse that resembled capoeira. I’m not trying to put u down, jut trying to put this out there, ur friend uub.

  33. uub Says:

Hey guys, maybe in order for goku to become even stronger than he is, to go up against picolo, he’s vs his clone that picolo made, maybe gets beat in that fight, then later comes back stronger than ever, beats his clone and comes after picolo. Just an idea.

  34. chicagoboy888 Says:

“Highlight of this movie is fighting with Goku and Piccolo, I think it has a tremendous impact.”

After reading this at first I thought, well of course that fight will have a tremendous impact, its the ultimate battle between the main character and villain.

But then I thought to myself, maybe he wasn’t just talking about in reference to just this movie, that would be too obvious. Maybe he meant it will have a big impact and make a breakthrough in action scenes in movie history.

  35. Chibi Vegeta Says:

This has just made my night. Ive never disliked Chatwin.. ive been watching him in shows like LOST and a couple other movies, and i enjoy his acting. Im so happy he went through with reading the manga. YAY.

Who cares what style the fighting is in.. at least theres more and more talk of all fighting there is now! Yay for that!

I cant wait to see that punch!

  36. supersqueak Says:

So Chatwin has read the manga thats great to hear I was happy with him from the start but this is good news :D

  37. Demetri Says:

u know wat rilly anoys me. Every1 says dat they r studying and reading but they dont say nothing when they find out its not the movie there makin.

Gohan and Roshi have the same fight styles so there pupils shud have it 2. Capoeira??! WWWWHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  38. 5aucy Says:

Um… Goku and Krillin did have Roshi’s style at the first tournament… Then Goku went off on his own… Since that, he had a combination of unique styles.

this is such a non point…

  39. J. Chatwin Says:

hey all, It’s Justin, just dropping by to say hi to all the dragonball fans, I hope you liked the interview. The movie is coming along fine, I love it, fox loves it, and hopefully you will to, lol Im pretty sure you will :D oh yeah, pick up the next copy of roadshow to see the rest of my interview

    cheers…

PS. me and james had a blast filming our final fight scene :D

  40. Chibi Vegeta Says:

    oh shut it.

  41. KRAN Says:

TO UUB: good point but the most of his martial arts are straight moves. While capoeira is more of a fighting system disguise as a dance. And even Akira mentiont that he wanted to make a Kung Fu drama, and based on the monkey king akira made dragonball.

and not Kung fu as historical but like those jackie chan movies. and even in Kung Fu(depends on which style) you got those swirls…

  42. KRAN Says:

Correction lol i said drama instead of manga…

  43. Tico Says:

Nice! Goku does Capoeira, just like myself, but i wonder if it fits in with dragonball

  44. Tico Says:

crap forgot to log in :(

  45. REPAIR MAN MAN Says:

    COOLIOS!!

    .
    .

I AM….REPAIR MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN….

  46. uub Says:

To Kran, thanks for explaining that to me, ur friend uub. :D

  47. Demetri Says:

Why is chi chi a fiter? in db she hated fighting. and goku and chi chi nevr fell in love, goku only agreed to marry her because he thought marriage was a food.

This movie will suck and everybody hu agrees, go 2
