Dragonball On Mexican TV
Superherohype! member, craigdbfan found a video from a Mexican TV show in which Dragonball is discussed.
Craig also provided a great translation:
The guy with the mustache talks about how he saw them filming a couple of scenes and saw the costumes and is also willing to say that around 70-80% of the film will be done in post-production (going to be heavy on special effects). He then states because of the fact they haven’t seen the finished product they’re not really sure what to make of the film. He states that there was a fan on the set who had many questions and one of his questions was when exactly does this take place within the Dragonball mythos. The man who is being interviewed then reveals that this takes place during the end of Dragonball and during the beginning of Dragonball Z ( Giving a reason as to why Goku is 18). He also talks about how 20th Century Fox didn’t ( and still doesn’t) want to release the least bit of information regarding the plot. He states that when he wanted to ask a question they would tell him to quiet down and not ask about anything about the film that would reveal to much. This is important he states that they might give a prologue during the beginning of the film showing Goku as a child he then says this is all speculation of course because 20th Century Fox wouldn’t release any information regarding the plot.
Also, ComicMix.com has a bit more information on James Marsters at the Sci-Fi summit.
Finally, the actor spoke briefly about playing the role of Piccolo in the Dragonball live-action film. He expressed his idea for the character being old, ugly and decrepit and having to convince the producers that Piccolo would not look “beautiful” as they had wanted.
He stated that he would rather be fired for not doing what the producers wanted than not do justice to the character.
When asked how faithful the film is to the anime, Marsters said, “We changed a few things, but I think we did it right”. He also expressed that, due to the large amount of VFX shots in the film, a lot of the quality of the movie rides on how much money Fox gives post-production for the special effects.

thats it, im starting a new religion as james marsters as my god
April 17th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Again, loving Marsters talk about Dragonball, tho he has me worried with this “depending on fox” talk. Does this mean they dont have a promised budget on post-production?
I like how 70-80% of the film IS post-production, that feels right since there are alot of effects that cant be done without CG. I mean, every ‘power-up’ is technically a shot with CG, and there are alot of power-ups.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:57 am
I’m sure many would join!

thats it, im starting a new religion as james marsters as my god [/quote]
Seconding that ^_^
And also I’m assuming it’s 70-80% of shots have CGI in them, rather than 70-80% of the film… THAT would be wayyyy too much.
April 17th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Thank you Mr. Marsters, you’ve done all dbz fans a favor
April 17th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Yea, i guess I have to agree with Lottie. That would be abit much for the entire movie.. but who knows, this guy isnt even from the production crew, he just gave an estimate of wat he saw..
April 17th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Yeah fox can be a pain with the budgets on their movies. Not even the matrix movies got away without some bad cgi fx. We need to go back to doing as much of these movies in reality as possible. What’s the point of it being live action if 90% of it’s still animated? Well I hope stephen chow has a say in the fx. He’s obviously got plenty of experience there.
And James Marsters, I have to say, is no doubt the coolest actor I’ve ever seen.
April 17th, 2008 at 10:48 am
agree, its kind of impossible to have 80% of the film cgi unless its a movie like 300, and we know thats not how its gonna be
he definitely meant 70-80% of the shots have cgi
April 17th, 2008 at 10:50 am
GO JAMES MARSTErS!!!
April 17th, 2008 at 11:11 am
This tells me that their is going to be alot of flying and energy blast being trown(spelled right?) Get thats what I want to see, the power levels.
April 17th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
See, this movie is going to ROCK THE DRAGON!!!! I knew it!
April 17th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I have a really great feeling that this movie is going to blow people away once it’s released. Especially if Fox is being this hush-hush about it. That just means they are expecting it to be a major hit.
And if this movie does well, then they’ll increase the budget on the next sequel - which it will definitely need if Vegeta is going to be involved.
I just hope that they don’t screw Vegeta up in the sequels (if he’s in it - which there’s no doubt in my mind that he won’t be).
April 17th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Do you guys think Vegeta will wear a wig or will the actor grow his hair long enough to spike it up and if so how long is it going to be?
April 17th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
if 70 to 80% of Dragonball is special effects than Dragonball Z must be 100% post production
April 17th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
LSB,
I dun think they will make vegeta wear a wig, they’re prob gunna do the hair like they did Goku’s. Kinda give it that spiked up look, but not too high.. cuz i think that would just look ridiculous if they did it EXACTLY like the anime..
April 17th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
isn’t anyone else excited that it says about it being the beginning of DBZ, too?
this totally confirms my previous theory that the Fulum Assasins are taking the place of Radditz and that Piccolo and Goku team up to kill them, as stated by someone else watching the filming of the movie.
It’ll happen.
April 17th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
if that happens then goku dies on this one, i would have thought he´ll die in the begining of the second one
who knows
maybe they only mean the introducion of gohan as the begining of dbz
though i like the idea of this one ending with goku´s death, picolo taking gohan and awaiting the arrival of vegeta in the sequel
April 17th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
but it seems too much for a first movie, itd have to be nearly 2 hours long or i guess it would feel rushed
April 17th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Zanny, I agree about the whole hair thing I just wanted to see what everyone ealse thought.
April 17th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
i still think that those fulum assassins are piccolo’s minions. Don’t forget, that goku has to fight with green guy first, before radditz (or someone who replaces him) arrives on earth.
April 17th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
And maybe goku won’t die at all in this movie? (we will see him like dying but we won’t actually see his death) remember that senzu beans can heal any wound
April 17th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Maybe they’ll do something like it ends all nice then right before the credits we see two Saiyan pods leaving Planet Vegeta. That would make sense.
April 17th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
this movie will end with gohan birth. and an unknown fireball in the sky… radditz. but we wont see radditz, just the odd looking meteor…
April 17th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Oh yeah, and James Marsters is offically my hero
April 17th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
@ Someone:
That’s exactly what I’ve been saying. I’m glad to see I’m not some weird conspiracy theorist hahaha
April 17th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
I doubt they would make Goku die, it just doesnt make sense. All this hype about Piccolo.. and for wat, for him to show up in the first half hour and then uh oh, Raditz arrives and kills Goku.. I dun think so.
I think they just mean the beginnin of DBZ like it ending off a few yrs l8r after Goku defeats Piccolo and they show Goku married to Chi chi and they have Gohan.. and if they want to give the audience a little extra something to show that there will be a sequel, they might show and alien spaceship on its way to earth or something like that… Anyway, thats just wat I think…
April 17th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Raditz doesn’t kill Goku lol, its going to follow the show, raditz comes and they have to team up to kill him; Piccolo kills them both. As Raditz is dying he tales Piccolo about 2 saiyans will come and destroy the earth (Vegeta and Nappa) which will make people want to see more. Then it ends.
I bet thats whats gonna happen.
April 17th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
anyone have any idea how long this movie is going to be?
April 17th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Thanks for crediting me JP I appreciate it
. As for the news we’ve gotten from this Mexican T.V Show and what James Marsters had to say about special effects being a major part of this film. I’m curious as to how much money they have left to spend on post-production.
April 17th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Hey JP did you check out the Luis Arrieta youtube video that Sean found????
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ydFi_Dqv3Y&fmt=18
Im shocked!! His acting is pretty good dude….
April 17th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I don’t get it…
Beginning of Dragonball Z? If thats the case then why wasn’t Radditz on the cast list??
April 17th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
zanny, all this hype about picolo is not the “real publicity”, its a consecuence of marsters being so cool and the only one to take a chance and say something
the real publicity hasnt even begun yet
picolo will be the main villian sp? of this movie, meaning most of the movie will be with him as the villian
but i wouldnt be surprised if a new villian(radiz or whoever) appeard by the end so that goku and picolo would have to join forces in order not to be both killed
though that part can easily be the begining of the sequel, we can´t know for sure yet
April 17th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
corey, nice video, he is pretty good indeed
more good news
April 17th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
I have seen that video. It’s funny.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
nanjirou- “agree, its kind of impossible to have 80% of the film cgi unless its a movie like 300, and we know thats not how its gonna be”
Funny thing is that the first report that this movie was actually being made stated that it would be filmed at the same studio in Montreal that 300 was filmed in. Speculation was that the backgrounds would be all CGI if this were to be a DragonBall Z movie, it isn’t though. It wasn’t completely bogus, but we obviously know that the movie wasn’t shot in Montreal, atleast for anything we know of yet.
April 17th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
goku was 18 in dragon ball, NOT dragon ball z.
he was either 23 or 24.
April 17th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Mwahaha!
April 17th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
April 17th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
mmm from the leaked pictures, it seems most of the backgrounds wont be cgi, so id guess its nothing like 300
April 17th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
will we be having some goku smileys? that would be so cool
April 17th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Hay JP the smilies kick ass.
April 17th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
ITS OVER 9000!!!!
April 17th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Me like smileys
April 17th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
ITS OVER 9000!!!!
it had to be done:x
April 17th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Whoa, Kickass
April 18th, 2008 at 3:31 am
JAMES MARSTERS RULES!!!
He’s really done ALL of us fans a HUGE favour!!
Anyways, i wonder what rating the DB movie will be? you know, like a 12A or G or something… Also i hope the CGI shots will look good seeing as theres like 80% of them. But Fox must have pretty high hopes for this seeing as it’s so hushed up.
P.S.- awesome new emotes JP. but if you put a Nappa emote up, the comments will forever be loaded with over 9000’s!
Caution!!
April 18th, 2008 at 7:10 am
James Marsters rules indeed!!
Speaking of rating, I hope it´s gonna be rated R or at least PG13. I HATE kid movies!!!
April 18th, 2008 at 7:26 am
i agree wid lottie dat wuld be way 2 much
but im real excited now cus it sounds good. dis is like a jigsaw and now its being put together little by little. like b4 people were critisizing goku, because they thought he was too old because wen he defeated piccolo he was a young boy. but now we know db live action movie is based on d ending of db to the beginnin of dbZ . and i fink dat guy is right. i fink the prologue will be that they will show a young goku so we get the idea. and dat makes more sense and gives people who have never watched db a good information about the beginin of goku. and its good to know the special effects are gona be good. cus without them this film will be rubbish. cus in the anime ders alot of energy blasts. cant wait! and make sure u give us PLENTY of info on the promoting of the film. i just cant wait to see a pic or a trailer just to see wat its like! u guys r doing great, keep searchin tough
p.s. one question, its comin out on april 8th 2009 in the U.S so wen is it comin out in the UK. i know 4 a fact it will come out in the U.K becuase dis is gona be a major film with major money spent on it so dey wont just show it in the states! no way! but wen will it come out here? cus it usually comes out later dan in the states. liked dreamgirls came out in the states in december 2006, but it came out here in the UK in february 2007! lol!
April 18th, 2008 at 11:05 am
I’m thinking that the ending will go like this:
-Goku and King Piccolo fight
-Goku kills King Piccolo and leaves him to die
-before he dies he spits out an egg(or however he’s making his minions) and dies
-Shoots off to Chi-Chi and Goku’s wedding
-then shoots to 5 years later at the next Tournament
-Piccolo jr. shows up says who he is
-they start to fight
-then Raditz’s pod lands and comes out and says “Hello Brother” or something like that
-roll credits.
April 18th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Well Transformers and X-men were both rated PG-13 for “sci-fi action violence”. And I’m sure that Dragonball will have plenty of that
So it’ll probably be PG-13 which will be a problem for my little sister who’ll be 12 at the time
April 18th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
a prologue in the beginning with little goku would be awesome. Also that means he might have his saiyan tail.
April 18th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
madix, i think thats very unlikely
i think picolo will just get younger using the dragonballs and thats gonna be “picolo jr”, no shooting egg
i think then goku will beat young picolo in their fight but forgive his life
they they changed a few things of the original story
hopefully it will end up being a great alternative story
April 18th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

July 15th, 2008 at 4:51 am
Ya know I gotta say that it is also possible that the movies gonna show goku and piccolo flying to go get his son back, then piccolo has a flash back about his father king piccolo and goku fighting. Piccolo remembers his conception, and remembers the fights that he and goku had during the worlds martial arts tournament. Just like the flashback piccolo has right before goku fought frieza. As piccolo finishes reminiscing, goku tells piccolo they’ve arrived.
