Movieland is reporting that actor Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) has joined the cast of Dragonball.
Translated: “We can not say much for the participation of Ernie in the film, only that his character will be an altar boy in a temple, which comes Gokú (Justin Chatwin) and his friends, who must support,” says Luis Reyes, representing 20th Century Fox.

Wow!!!!!!! This is good news. I thought the casting was done, but it looks like it’s not. It looks like James Wong is hiding alot of Secrets. I have a feeling that he might push Dragonball to 2009. Think about it! Fox hasn’t even advertised Dragonball yet. They usually over kill on the promotion. Look at the Simpson movie. They promoted The Simpson movie for a year before putting it out. Anyways I have no idea who Ernie is going to be. He might be Kami or Mr. Popo…. Some how I have a feeling there is going to be alot of controversy in this post. If they do make him Mr. Popo I hope they don’t give him those lips. That is so annoying!!

The keyword here is ” monaguillo de un templo”. Can we get a fluent spanish speaker here to explain the word, please? The [what?] of a temple?
The better translation I see in the web-dictionaries is acolyte. “Altar boy” is too close to church terminology. Accolyte indicates a follower or possibly a servant. Most likely, it means that he’s another disciple. I wouldn’t place my money on Mr Popo just yet.

To answer your question about how Grandpa Gohan got killed and Goku killing King Piccolo when he was only 15.
1) I believe they are fusing King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr.’s characters into one. Marsters said they changed it to ‘Lord’ Piccolo, who used to be a good guy but got into a bad argument and was imprisoned for 2000 years and is back for revenge. In the end, Marsters said Heroic wouldn’t be a bad term to describe Lord Piccolo, but it’s a long story.
2) In the movie, Lord Piccolo’s Namek Ninjas (WHAT?! NINJAS?!) kill Grandpa Gohan.

First off, yes you can say that Goku was a kid when he killed King Piccolo…from what i know if you have read the manga, in the beginning when goku meats bulma i think she was around 16 years old and goku might have been younger then her by like 1 or 2 years…and when he fights piccolo that’s towards the end of the dragonabll series so he must have been older at least..by how much i dont know
secondly, yes goku did kill his grandpa but during the fortune teller baba saga goku had to fight a man in a mask..i think it was a rabbit mask..the man in the mask was his grandpa but if you noticed he has a halo on his head which indicates that he is dead and was granted permission to be on earth while he’s dead..anyways thats all i know

Luis Reyes says Ernie will be doing some Funny scenes. He also said Ernie adjusted his schedule to cast in Dragonball….
“He’s very happy with the film, at the moment, He is in Durango with the entire production team doing very funny scenes,” said Reyes.
I hope Ernie turns out to be Kami and not Mr. Popo…. Oh yeah!! That’s brillant Silverblue. What if Kami is the one who kept King Piccolo prisoner in the movie. That would be cool!

Mr Popo is not “black”. He is some sort of noseless elf like creature with black colored skin.
The reason why most people assume that he is Mr Popo was not because he is black, but because the article mentions an “altar boy (Monaguillo)” that works in a temple. Who is the person we all know from dragonball (piccolo saga) that has a role similar to that of an Altar boy? Mr Popo does. He takes care of Kami’s temple (or lookout in the english version). No one is being racist.

As a fluent Spanish speaker, in Puerto Rico, “monaguillo” means Altar Boy. The little kids that follow the priest around (hey, I gave up my religion ages ago, I can’t remember what Altar Boys do).

I’m just posting as unknown cause, I am already part of way to many forums/blogs. But my guess is Mr. Popo, not because he is black, but because of the Altar boy. I think there trying to make this movie a realistic fantasty. So Kami may not be in the sky, but its hard to make a live action Popo.
I think the opening of the movie will tell about the Dragon Balls and how they scattered and showing Kami Imprisoning Piccilo. Starting the live action movie with Pilaf would end up terrible IMO. So thats why they are doing the whole Piccolo theme.
Anyone think in the next movie the opening will be about The Red Ribbon just for an opening, and then Go into the Saiyan Saga? (So in a 4th movie its about Cell and Androids?)

I have a really good feeling about this movie. As long as it’s made to a wide audience PG-13 rating and they need to start pushing it out there. I mean, not too many people know it’s being made unless you look it up.
And they need to start by putting DBZ back on cartoon network. that’d help out a lot. Then by the time the trailer comes out it will have a lot of hype and the movie will do great in the box office. It’s all about how you put the movie out there and make a big deal about it.

I totally agree!!!! They should defiantly put Dbz and Db back on Cartoon Network…. It will get the fans totally hyped about the movie. I think they should start by playing the King Piccolo saga first and go from there. They should introduce something new to the show. Like Dragonball HD (High Definition) or 3D, or maybe even Dragonball SE (Special edition). That would be cool to see Dragonball in 3D glasses. I’ll be watching it everyday just to see Goku turn Super Saiyin in 3D…..

Yup, as a native Spanish speaker I can definitely attest that Altar Boy would be a correct way to translate “Monaguillo”. They are the little kids that assist and aid the Priest/Father during mass. At least in Roman Catholic religion, which is dominant here in Mexico.
I’d love Mr. Ernie Hudson to play Mr. Popo, but he might actually be a version of Kami-sama. I’d prefer Marsters with different make-up (i.e. wrinkles), but who knows?
These little pieces of news are just sounding funnier by the minute. Even though I was dead-set against a live action DB, I’m now looking forward to watch all of this on the big screen, however weird it might end up being… ^_^
But no Kuririn/Krilin?! He’s my fave and a pivotal character to the series. He’s Goku’s best friend!

Al Sharpton, please… calm down. Mr. Popo is not black as in race. He is a creature that has no nose, has elf like ears, and happens to have black skin. Shiat zu has white skin, but that does not make him white as in race, does it? If you read the “altar boy” phrase, and you watch dragonball, you would conclude that the character that has a well represented task in the series similar to that of an altar boy; that is Mr. Popo. Ernie is to old to be Krillin. It could be that he is playing Kami. Or maybe even an original character, but the most logical conclusion is that he will play Mr. Popo
If you like to debate issues of race in the DB movie, you can join the IMDB dragonball boards. It is not a pretty place (Not recommended if you are a sane person).

Why wouldn’t Marsters play kami (if he’s even in the film)? Could it be that Hudson is Sifu Norris? Maybe. Maybe Sifu Norris is one of those crappy replacement characters, like Teto is for Krillin. I wouldn’t be surprise seeing how the Wong thinks his genious ideas for replacement characters are better than the originals. I hate how they’re putting Dragon Ball in our world! It’s supposed to be in a fantasy world, with Dinosaurs, animal people, and hovering cars. But noo! Hollywood thinks we want to see Goku in 2008 real-Earth. Seriously Fox, put some freaking money into big name projects like this or else it’ll be crap.
I think the person casted as Goku should have actually resembled a saiyan. Chatwin is the epitome of a normal-sized human.

I agree. This movie will suck if they keep changing stuff or replacing characters. The thing that made so mad was Goku going to school, second Teto replacing krillin. The way I see it it will end up looking like spiderman 1. In any case, I am not sure, but i think that dragonball takes place in Our world or some futuristic version of earth. In the movie Dead Zone bulma mentions that the bad guys are somewhere in the red sea (or was it the dead sea?) And recently i heard someone else make a reference of earth in the series to another location but i do not remember it. I have been able to pick up some hints on thet it is in this world (with talking animals and dinosaurs), but I could be wrong. And the Movie is not set in 2008. Some of the earlier reports from Mexico indicated that The cars used for the movie all had plates that said “City of the Future”.

Yeah, I too have heard about the “city of the future” thing, but the car that runs over Justin Chatwin is a Dodge Charger. I saw the exact same model and color on the freeway the other day, so I don’t know how futuristic it’ll be. It just ticks me off that the place it’s set in feels too much like our world instead of the Pangea-like fantasy version of Earth in manga.

Eventhough I’m kidding, I also have to look at the fact that up until now they have stated who each actor is playing. Here’s why I say Krillin, ask yourself why not announce who Ernie is playing?
Answer they are too afraid.
Mr. Popo or Kami would be too obvious. Fans would probably like either one. So far this cast is a radical departure from what people expect. Besides not caring about fans, I think casting a tall old black man would be in keeping with the radical casting that they’ve been doing.
I think that somehow, someway the good folks over at Fox are aware of fans being somewhat apprehensive. They have alot invested in this movie. If it were to comeout tooooo early that Krillin is black, it could possibly negatively impact this movie. So its far better to keep it underwraps until just before the opening of the movie.
I would looove to be wrong, but I’m old enough to look at recent movie history. That makes me suspicious that his role may not be widely accepted. Hollywood looves to make politically correct casts. The Kingpin (DAREDEVIL), Catwoman (CATWOMAN), Harvey Dent (BATMAN), Alicia Masters, Sue Storm (FANTASTIC FOUR), Pete Ross (SMALLVILLE), all these characters are white in the comics but black on film. I for one am SOOO tired of blacks being tokens. Oh before accusing me of being a racist, just know I’m black.

i know theyre saying there is no krillin but what if its for the temple where krillin grew up and learned his first martial arts? it would be nice to have him because he plays some pretty big roles in dragonball and dragonball z.

I would have to say its kami.Ernie Hudson brings a strong voice and would fit the role nicely. To say its popo? Well you dont have key rolls like krillin or tien, so they are not scared to leave some characters and there development for future films. I think popo just doesnt bring anything to the story. Wouldnt have many lines (lol) Characters in a movie are usually there if they add to the story a key element or have room for there own development. I feel popo brings neither to this script.
